Course Description & Requirements


Computer Science 20

Prerequisite:
Science 10

Instructor - Mr. R. Polan

Description: This course is intended for students who wish to increase their understanding of computer software and hardware systems. Students will learn how to apply problem-solving methods and techniques to computer solutions. Students will explore issues in computer science and the societal impact of computer technology. Programming assignments will provide insight into how machine based problem-solving works. Keyboarding skills are recommended but not essential.

Required Textbook:  There is no required textbook for this class.

Additional Requirements:
System requirements for computer at home:
600-MHz Pentium III-class processor recommended (or better)
Visual Studio .NET 2008 Express Edition can be installed onto any of the following systems:
Windows XP Professional
Window XP Home Edition
Windows Vista
Windows 7


Memory:
500 MB of RAM, 3.3 gigabytes (Gb) of available space required for installation of the program and 500 Mb of available space required on system drive for assignments.
Additional 1.9 GB of available space required for MSDN Library documentation.
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
Super VGA (1024 x 768) or higher-resolution display with 256 colors.
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device and keyboard.
A Memory Key storage device is advisable for moving files between home and school.

Computer Science 30

Prerequisite:
Computer Sc 20

Instructor - Mr. R. Polan

Description: This course continues to build on the concepts learned in Computer Science 20 using the programming language Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition. It is intended for students who wish to increase their understanding of software and hardware systems, gain experience in designing and programming solutions, apply problem-solving methods and techniques to computer solutions and explore issues in computer science and the societal impact of computer technology. Assigned projects will advance the students knowledge of data types, output, input, procedures, control statements, functions, arrays, files, number systems, records and object-oriented programming. A working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook Express, Word, Excel and Power-Point is recommended.
