Student Writing Folders or Portfolios
Writing folders or portfolios are maintained by the students. Each folder may
include completed writing as well as unfinished drafts, a list of topics for
future writing and a writing record. Writing folders belong to the students
and reflect the students' writing development.
Purposes
- to collect students' writings over time
- to provide a tangible record of students' writing for assessment by the
teacher and the students
- to provide a tangible record of students' writing progress to share with
parents
Teacher Note:
- Have students date their samples as they write or revise them.
- Have students identify writing as "first draft," "revision"
or "final copy."
- Check each folder regularly so that specific needs can be addressed with
students as they arise.
- Encourage students to share their writing with peers.
- Writing samples should be discussed during teacher-student conferences to
assist students in setting goals for future writings.
