Assessment involves collecting data to make a judgement and evaluation involves judging value based on available data. Assessment does not involve assigning grades.  You can have assessment without evaluation but you cannot have evaluation without assessment. Observing cooperative learning groups in action allows you to effectively assess students' work and understanding. Cooperative learning groups also offer a unique opportunity for feedback from peers and for self-reflection.
