How
do I group my students?
If you are new
to the guided reading approach it is probably best to begin with
homogeneous groupings based on reading ability (determined through
assessment such as running records, teacher observations, etc).
This enables you to focus on a few strategies for a particular reading
group. However, it is important to continually assess the reading
development of your groups as some students will be ready to move
to another group sooner than others.
As you become
more familiar with the guided reading approach you will be able
to identify areas when your groupings can be arranged by reading
selection (i.e. birds, snakes, bats), genre (fantasy or informational
texts), or social situations.
