What is a Podcast?
In the beginning, podcasts were audio broadcast available on the Web
to the public for free downloading to a personal computer or a digital
audio player. Despite its name, a podcast may be played through a variety
of digital audio software and hardware. Use is not limited to the iPod
brand products developed by Apple. Now however, the downloads are not
always free and you have the option of playing them on the computer or
downloading them.
There are also variations on the podcast to include vidcast (videocast)
or screencasts (which are used to show how to work a particular software,
for example). Screencasts are basically videos about what is happening
on the computer screen.
Example Podcasts
Getting Started: How do I begin?
- You will need software for recording your voice. Please download Audacity
Software. If you are downloading this software to SPS machines,
you will need to contact your school's technician for the installation
of the software on your school computers. You
should also download the LAME MP3 encoder - Allows Audacity to export
MP3 files. The LAME MP3 encoder is found on the download page of Audacity.
Windows download: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windows
- SPS Teachers: You will need a headset with a microphone (ask your
secretary to purchase one for you off the purchasing site). You will
need to ask your school's technician to install Audacity and the LAME
MP3 encoder on all machines you want to use.(New SPS computers should
all work for podcasts). PLEASE NOTE: There are tutorials
for using Audacity located at: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/
and many of the sites where you could store podcasts are now being
blocked by our school division. Therefore, double check to make sure
that your place of storage is not being blocked.

- Kid-Cast -
Kid-cast.com is a website for kids to publish their own Podcasts so
that other kids can listen. The idea is to make sure that there's a
kid-safe Podcast out there for our young minds to hear. Contribution
by kids makes it that much better. At Kid-cast.com, we review each podcast
before posting it, and try to make sure it's appropriate for certain
age groups. That's why we created the Kid-cast.com Podcast Rating System.
