Internet Safety

New technology breeds new concerns. On a ten year old's blog, I found this message about why he leaves out peoples names when he writes out what he has done for the day.

"In the “Online Journal” page there are letters where you think that there should be names. This is because I put the persons first letter in their name instead of their full name. This is because I’m responsible for keeping them safe on my website. "

Whenever we teach the use of technology we need to make sure we remind out students that NOTHING is absolutely private on the World Wide Web. Please make sure to tell students not to publish any personal information. Avoid using first and last names, do not list tephone numbers, addresses, email addresses or places of employment. Students need to understand what they post now can have eternal life on the WWW. Also, make sure that you have had your students' parents sign school board release forms for projects that involve the internet.
