Module One:
Taking the Pulse

This task is completed as you finish the voice lesson. Start by watching the video on why someone becomes a journalist. Then, start your assignment. You will:

  • write a reflective piece
  • describe how you write
  • generate a couple of ideas for the second phase of "My Way", Picking up the Pace.

View the the assignment specifications for the writing (.rtf) and the proposa1 planning process (.rtf).Remember that the ideas you develop here will eventually become a potential final project that replaces a final exam. Dream big! Finally, hand in your reflective writing and your proposal form (.rtf).

How you write and why you write is very important. Your job is to record your thoughts about your own writing.

Module Two:
Picking up the Pace

Task Two has several steps. All steps must be completed by the deadlines you negotiate with your teacher. Picking up the pace has several key components:

  • Review your ideas and questions from Taking the Pulse
  • Pitch your project and have it approved by you teacher
  • Create a negotiated evaluation plan and have it approved by your teacher
  • Plan, create and revise your project
  • Publish your project

View the assignment specifications for Picking up the Pace (.rtf), and view the process of creating an evaluation plan (.rtf)

Setting your own goals for learning means you learn what you need to know. when you need to know it.

Task Three:
Stretching Out

In this section you create a literary journalism piece reflecting on you experiences, and the showcase of your project from Picking up the Pace to show what you have learned. In order to do this start at the very beginning of "My Way".

Read over the writing you did in Taking the Pulse and take some notes on your impression of your early work. Then review your original questions about journalism. Finally complete the set of questions (.rtf) on Taking the Pulse.

View the assignment specifications and evaluation (.rtf) for stretching out. Remember that the focus of Stretching Out is to show what you have learned throughout the year. You will create a portfolio of your work, complete the reflective questions, and write a short literary piece. This work will count as the final exam for this course.

streching
Knowing how much farther you can reach through your learning is measured through how far you can stretch.
Throughout Modules One to Three you have been creating work about how you write. You started with assessing what skills you had and what you wanted to learn. Then you created a project to meet your learning needs, and a plan for how to evaluate that project. Finally you collected your work for the year and analyzed what you had learned. Then you created a literary journalism piece about your experiences and learning, quoting your own work and explaining your own observations. By the time you completed the entire process, your questions were answered and your style had improved. If you were a professional journalist, you would have taken the first many steps on a repeating cycle to understand and improve your own work through life-long learning.
