Photojournalism Portfolio
Module 3 - On Assignment Group Project
Teacher Page
(return to the On Assignment Main Page / student version of this page / Project Objectives)

Introduction:

For this project students work with a partner to create a digital portfolio and post it on the internet. Their images will work together to profile a person or create a photo essay. These images will be put together on web pages so that the viewer can navigate through them, and will be accompanied by related captions. The web site they create will make a visual canvas that supports the themes expressed in the photographs. Additional details are available on the project requirements page.

The students' desire to express themselves through images and competence with web design are the key to this project.

Your role as the teacher:

As the teacher, your role in the photojournalism portfolio project is to help students get the technical resources they need to complete the project. Students will need the ability to FTP (transfer files to a server so they can be seen on the internet) and access to either a digital camera or a scanner. They will also need a computer program for editing images and potentially a web authoring program. If your school cannot provide these tools, student should not attempt this project.

While students who try this project need to have some background in the creation of web pages, you may not have any. This does not mean that they should not try the project. However, they will need support from someone in your division or school who has the following:

  1. Security access to create a spot for your students on the school server.
  2. An Acceptable Use Policy for students and parents to sign before the project starts.
  3. The potential to be released occasionally to meet the students during class time.
  4. A downloaded web album utility like those available on the photo links page and the support to use it.

As a teacher in the photojournalism project, you also need to complete the roles suggested in the teacher introduction to this module.
