Introduction:

Advertising is key to magazine production. Chances are that a significant percentage of every magazine's pages are made of ads targeting a particular audience. In this lesson, you will learn the different advertising techniques and have a chance to write your own advertisement.


Activities:

Task One - Trying to hook you
Advertisers have many "tricks up their sleeves" to try and hook you as a consumer. Read the following information on advertising techniques.

Task Two - Talk the Talk
Along with a variety of advertising techniques, there are also a number of principles for writing effective advertising copy.

Use the links provided to create a short reference page, detailing the best way to write successful ad copy. This will be handed in with your ad.

Your handout should include the following key concepts:

Task Three - Walk the Walk

With the information you have on advertising techniques and writing advertising copy, you will now have the chance to create your own advertisement.

You must:
1. Come up with a product
2. Decide on a target audience
3. Create a magazine ad for your product
4. Hand-in a write-up detailing the choices you made for your ad and why you made them (audience, advertising technique, use of color, font, and placement)

You will be graded on specific criteria for your ad and explanation. Be sure to review the evaluation form before starting your work.
