Process of Photography
Module 1, Activity 7.2 - Editing and Using Images
Student Page
(teacher lesson for this page)

Introduction:

In this lesson, you will take and manipulate images. As you work with the image, you will prepare a tutorial on how to do the activites using the hardware and software available at your school.

Activities:

Task One - Taking an Image
In this task you will take a series of images that you think are funny or interesting, but not necessarily newsworthy. Remember to keep the subject matter of your work school appropriate.

camera Using a digital camera or video camera, take between 10 and 15 pictures.

After taking these pictures, you need to have them available to you in an editable computer picture format, like a .jpeg.

There are two primary ways to achieve this, and what you can do will depend on the technology available to you. You can either take the images with a digital camera and download them to the computer, or you can take the image with a camera that uses film, have the film developed and then scan the pictures. Either method needs to result in a series of .jpeg images.

When you save the images, be sure to give them names that will make it clear to others what the photo is. Avoid names like Image 1, Girl, or Oct.16. These dates/names do not describe the image you will be working with.

Save the images to a cd or a disk.

Objectives:

You will be able to
- understand photo layout, cropping, sizing, and writing cutlines
- recognize how computers and desktop publishing are used in commercial journalism
- recognize writing as a process of constructing meaning for themselves and others
- analyze and evaluate your own and others' writing

Resources:

- a digital camera OR 35 mm. camera and scanner
(Photoshop, Fireworks, etc)
- a computer and internet access
- a disk or cd
- assignment overview and evaluation page

Task Two - Learning to Manipulate
Once you have the group of image files, you are ready to start learning how to manipulate the images. Your job is to learn one of the specified tasks, make a tutorial on how to do the task and hand that tutorial in to your teacher in a digital form.

Tutorial Topics

  • download an image and save it in the correct spot
  • optimize an image
  • crop an image
  • change the size of an image
  • change the colors in an image
  • remove something from an image
  • use layers
  • add words or images to an image
  • insert an image in a document and a slide show (power point)
  • other topics your teacher agrees to
The assignment overview explains what you need to do in this assignment and how to evaluate the work you have created.
