Steps in Publishing a Magazine

The Business of a Magazine

  1. Decide on a target audience
  2. Project circulation numbers
  3. Create a budget
  4. Search for advertisers
  5. Determine length of submissions

What will be Written?

  1. Create a list of article topics
  2. Determine how many articles will be solicted and how many will be written in house.
  3. Assign articles
  4. Research articles
  5. Draft articles
  6. Present articles to editor-in-chief or assistant editor for copy editing
  7. Revise articles

Laying it all Out

  1. Layout magazine - consider grid, number of possible pages, placement of ads, scale of pages
  2. Design cover - include photo, cover lines
  3. Complete "paste-up" of all pages
  4. Use available software to create magazine

Get it to the Public

  1. Send magazine to printer
  2. Distribute magazine

Deciding what will be written

  1. How long will submissions be
  2. Create a list of topics
  3. Assign topics
  4. First draft
  5. Copy editing done by editor
  6. Revise articles

What else do we need?

  1. Work on advertising, cover design and layout as assigned by the editor or assistant editor.
  2. Every member of the group must contribute at least one feature, one advertisement, one filler and one visual element
