(student version of this page / teacher version of this lesson)

View the interview, then answer the questions to be sure you understand the key concepts. Once you have completed this, create a transcript of the interview.

A transcript is a verbatim (every word) record of what was said. The name of the speaker is followed by a colon, and then the words are listed. Because the speaker and speech are separated by a colon, quotation marks are not needed. Between each new speaker, leave a line.

The interview on the left was taped in the winter of 2004. The person being interviewed is Star-Phoenix City Desk Editor Donella Hoffman. The subject of the interview is "What is News?"

Questions:

  1. What does Hoffman say news is?
  2. What is the first example she gives?
  3. Why would the newspaper run the story?
  4. What is Hoffman's second example?
  5. What criteria of newsworthiness does it meet?

This movie is 1, 148 KB and is saved as a .mov file viewable in Quicktime. The interviewer was Wendy James.
