Introduction:

In this lesson, you will have the chance to use a style guide to find correct answers for a treasure hunt and correct a poorly written paragraph.


Activities:

Task One - Find the Right One
The best way to learn what's in a style guide is to use one!

In this activity, you need to use your style guide to choose the correct way to abbreviate, capitalize, etc. 30 different standard writing problems. You must provide the page reference for each correct answer.

You may work in partners for this activity.

Your teacher may choose to make this a timed activity or a contest.

Task Two - Rewriting
Here is a news story to which many mistakes have been added.

Objectives:

You will be able to
- quote accurately, paraphrase where appropriate, and use appropriate attribution methods
- analyze and evaluate their own and others' writing
- use a journalism style guide

Resources:

- journalistic style guide
- treasure hunt student sheet
- poorly written news story


Task Two Continued . . .
In order to rewrite the story correctly you may need to review the rules regarding:
1. Capitalization
2. Sentence structure
3. Punctuation
4. Proper abbreviations

As well, you will need to look up the rules regarding:
1. The proper way to use quotations within news stories
2. How to paragraph in a news story

Once you are finished, you will be given the news story as it was originally written and allowed to make corrections to your version.
