A key concept to understanding the relationship between First Nations people and the Canadian government is Worldview. Worldview can be described as a particular philosophy or view of life. The sum total of all these beliefs and philosophies is considered to be the worldview of that society.

At the time of contact, Europeans view of First Nations culture was that of a dieing culture . How could a culture survive without written documents? What Europeans did not understand was the concept of an oral culture and the role that elders played in that culture.

Elders in the 1980's felt it was important to write down First Nations philosophy of life and the code of ethics. Upon reading these documents it becomes clear that First Nations Culture is a very complex worldview.

1a) Contact an elder in your community and have him or her speak to you on traditional values.

2.. The chart describing the Traditional Code of Ethics, states the values of First Nations people. Give modern day examples for six of these ethics.
