The term Aboriginal Rights, refers to those rights which Aboriginal peoples have because of their indigenous status in the place now known as Canada.

 

 

 

 

 

This site will help you do the following activities.

1. Using the Glossary, define the terms nation and sovereignty.

2. Once you have defined the terms, nation and sovereignty, determine whether Canada fit the classical definition of nation under the following headings? If not, explain why we don't fit the category.
a) Language
b) Common culture
c) Cultural dress
d) Religion
e) Flag
f) Money
g) Military
h) Government

3. If we do not fit all of the above categories as a country, then why does Canada exist as a nation?

4.If it is a given that a sovereign nation has the right to enter into treaties with other sovereign nations, then do the following:

- Read the information given on "Types of Treaties". Explain each of the following statements and give an example of each:
a) Treaties viewed as international treaties
b) Treaties viewed as contracts
c) Treaties viewed as non- binding promises
d)
Treaties viewed as semi-legislation

5. How would you view treaties with aboriginal people in Canada today? Explain your answer in a short paragraph.
