Treaties, once they are established, need to be implemented. To do this the Canadian government came up with an administrative system referred to as the Indian Act. It is the only act that deals with one specific group of people in Canada. The act has been referred to as repressive and colonial by native people, as well as a barrier to self-government. The Canadian government is presently trying to amend the act, but has run in to many stumbling blocks along the way.

This site will help you do the following activities.

ACTIVITIES

1. Go to the Indian Act and describe the intended purpose of the act.

2. What three changes have been made in the act since 1896?

3. What were Duncan Campbell Scott's comments about the act?

4. List six areas of First nations life that the act was intended to control. (The act is covered in detail in the second unit.)
