PEOPLE AND SCRIP
The government of Canada refused to enter in to treaty negotiations with Metis people. However, they were willing to give out Scrip to Metis people as promised in the Manitoba Act. This
exclusion from the treaty process is still a contentious issue
today.
ACTIVITIES 1.What two things were Metis Scrip intended to do? 2. Scrip was issued in government bonds for various amounts. Explain why this was done. 3. How was a black market in Scrip developed? 4. Patrice Cyr's story dealing with Scrip was a common one. What happened to his intended allotment? 5. Look at the Powley case and explain in a paragraph what it does for Metis people in Canada. |
