UNIT FOUR - ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT
Economic Development
is a Self- Government issue for Aboriginal peoples. How do the people
develop natural resources for the economic prosperity of First Nations
people? A balance between the traditional worldview of the land and
the economic reality of a viable economic project needs to be struck.
As Aboriginal peoples generate local economic activity, they have a
chance to influence the ways in which natural environments are used.
By using an approach that values the environment and all living things
Aboriginal peoples make a contribution to preserving Canada's natural
environment.
Aboriginal people in Canada are not only involved with the economic
development of Forestry, Mining, Fishing and the Agricultural industry,
but are also involved in the whole gamete of entrepreneurial activities.
However much work needs to be done in the area of economic development,
when you consider the high rates of unemployed Aboriginal people and
especially the high numbers of Aboriginal youth who are also unemployed.
The Aboriginal youth population of Canada is growing at a tremendous
rate; it is therefore imperative that sound economic development policies
be offered to the rising youth population.
