Adaptations have not been made to individual lessons or activities
in this course because adaptations need to be developed in accordance with individual
students' needs. Instead, this overview will give some suggestions to the teacher
for possible adaptations.
Adaptations in the area of Curriculum:
- alter the specific resources mentioned in this course for
more ease or difficulty
- alter the number of activities or lessons required for a
specific student
- alter the order of activities or lessons
Adaptations in the area of environment:
- arrange for a specific student to work with a teacher aide
who could: read instructions and material for the student, write as directed
for a student, explain the activities in depth for the student and provide
one on one help for the student while working on activities.
- provide an alternate work area.
Adaptations in the area of instruction:
- alter the pacing of lessons
- alter the instructional strategies
- provide advance organizers
- provide choices for activities
- provide exemplars
- alter the evaluation criteria or the weighting of activities
- break assignments down into smaller pieces
- alter activities to accommodate the students' strengths (for
example, allow the student to develop a visual response rather than a written
one)
- use portfolios for evaluation
- adapt methods of reporting
- provide alternatives to tests
Within the adaptive dimension, teachers can choose one or
all of the above adaptations as needed.
