Habitats
-
A
Desert WebQuest for the Optional Unit: Habitats
Have you ever wondered how so many plants and animals can
survive in a desert?
- Create-A-Habitat
WebQuest
Remember when you won your first goldfish at the fair? You
have probably all gone through several goldfish bowls in
your lives. What happened to that bowl that was left behind
after the last fish died? Does it have to be filled with
water? Does it have to contain fish? What are your options?
There is an empty 10 gallon tank in our classroom that needs
to be filled! What can we fill it with that we can afford,
and that we will be able to maintain? As a class, we will
choose our habitat! After completing this WebQuest, you
should be able to effectively establish and maintain an
aquarium or vivarium! You should be able to transfer this
knowledge to any pet or hobby! Children take on the roles
of plant and animal biologists. Rubrics are included for
assessment of group participation and oral presentations.
- Seaworld
This site takes you to the habitats of animals in captivity
at Sea World. The home page allows you to discover information
about every animal and hear the sound it makes. Good research
companion for animal unit.
- Habitats/Biomes
The Earth has many different environments, varying in temperature,
moisture, light, and many other factors. Each of these habitats
has distinct life forms living in it, forming complex communities
of interdependent organisms. A complex community of plants
and animals in a region and a climate is called a biome.
Biomes included in this site are: Arctic, Desert, Antarctic,
Tundra, Chapparal (scrub), Tundra, Taiga (coniferous forest),
Temperate Deciduous Forest, Grasslands, Tropical Rain Forest,
Savanna, Prairie, Pond, Swamp, Ocean, Intertidal Zone and
Coral Reef.
Each site is defined and located on a world map. Click on
any animal to find out how it adapts to its environment.
- Biomes
of the World
The home page allows access to biomes of the world, freshwater
ecosystems and marine ecosystems. Each site provides information
on the animals/plants found in that biome. Maps and full
colour photographs, graphs, etc.
- The
Virtual Zoo
The home page opens at The Virtual Zoo. Click on “View
the site” to discover a world map of HABITATS &
BIOMES. All the biomes are represented as portions of a
pie under the map. Click on the biomes you wish to study.
Full colour photographs with descriptions. Click on photos
for full screen images. Click on key words for more detailed
information.
- Desert
Life in the American Southwest
Desert animals, wildlife, plants, minerals and geology,
people and cultures. Excellent resource with great illustrations.
- Bucket
Buddies On-Line Project
Students around the United States and other countries will
collect samples from local ponds to answer the question:
Are the organisms found in pond water the same all over
the world?
Magnets
Magnets
- In
this unit, 10 lessons and a student booklet walk students
through learning about magnets.
- Amazing
Magnets
This site contains lesson plans for an activity based magnet
unit for
grade two.
- The
Magnet Page – Lessons and Links
This site contains a series of links to actual hands-on
lessons and activities for studying magnets.
- List
of sites – including science and magnets
This
site includes a list of sites that contain science lesson
plans for teachers. It includes magnets, along with a variety
of other topics.
- Exploring
Magnets and Magnetism
This site provides lessons on magnetism. This workshop will
introduce the teacher to an inquiry-based exploration of
magnets and magnetism. The primary goal will be to show
how students can discover the properties of magnets and
magnetic fields. This activity will allow participants to
use the science process skills of observation, data collection
and recording. Through inference, they will make generalizations
based upon their results.
- Physical
Processes - Magnetism
This site contains interactive activities for students.
They can explore the principles of magnetism through on-site
power point lessons and through interactive programs. Lots
of other science topics are included.

- Cool
Experiments with Magnets
This web site is devoted to magnetism and the experiments
you can do with permanent magnets and electro-magnets.
- National
Museum of Science and Technology
This Canadian museum is not easily browsed; however, a search
of the site using the keyword "magnet" turned
up a number of hits that may be useful to the classroom
teacher. Use the button above to search the site yourself
for this or similar terms. Below are direct links to three
of the best resources.

Weather
- Weather
A thematic unit for grade K-2. Students will explore the
world of weather with a focus on rain.
- Weather
Eye
WeatherEye is a weather education site, created by a forecast
team working with local educators. This site includes a
section for students in grades 2 to 8, a section for grades
6-12, a "Teacher's Lounge" and a parent's area.
On-line lessons are designed to be easy to integrate into
class schedules. Lessons put students in "real world"
situations, like driving through a blizzard or being the
mayor of a town threatened by a hurricane.
- The
Weather Classroom
Presented by the Weather Channel, this site brings the outdoors
into your classroom.
- Sask.
Ed. Science Curriculum Guide site for Weather
Grade 2 Science Core Unit: Weather - Produced by SaskEd.
- What
is Weather
An interactive introduction to the elements of weather.
- Tracking
Local Weather - Grades 2-4
Measuring and recording local temperature, precipitation,
wind direction and wind speed for analysis and comparison
with official sources. This activity ties together the Wind
Direction, Measuring Rainfall, and Wind Observation activities.
