Centennial Timeline

Preface

How can we capture 100 years of Saskatchewan history in 30 pages? It is an impossible task. In putting together this timeline, we have attempted to emphasize events which have had major impact on the people who live here. Other writers, no doubt, would choose many of the same events, but inevitably, some choices would be different.

A timeline, which by nature is date-specific, poses certain limitations. How do we include events which happen over time, those which do not have specific start and end dates? And some events are difficult to pin down to exact years. When we have encountered discrepancies, we have made what we consider to be reasonable choices.

How, in a few pages, can we present it all? For instance, how do we include all the people who have contributed to the culture and sport of the province? Regrettably, you will not find mention of your favourite writers, artists or musicians, and few sports celebrities are included. And how do we decide which Saskatchewan innovators or inventors to include? How can we be inclusive of the faith communities or the immigrant groups which have contributed much to our province? We grappled with these challenges. Forgive us if we have not included what is important to you.

We have much to be proud of in Saskatchewan. As we celebrate our centennial, we hope that this timeline will help you to understand how the years have shaped the Saskatchewan we know and love today.
