Curricular Connections:
Social Studies- Grade Two Unit 2: Heritage Module Two - The Local Community Then and Now

Modifications could be made to some activities to use in Grade Three Unit 2: Identity Module One - Communities Then and Now

  • Examination of Historical Photographs (WORD / PDF): Students will examine historical photographs of communities throughout Saskatchewan and compare them to photographs taken more recently. (Viewing Guides)
  • Pictorial Timeline (WORD / PDF): Students create a pictorial timeline about their own community over the past 100 years (or as far back as your community can go if less than 100 years). (Timeline Document)
  • Community Heritage Quilt (WORD / PDF): Students illustrate squares of fabric that will be sewn into a community heritage quilt.
  • Weekend Scavenger Hunt (WORD / PDF): Student take home this sheet to complete while learning more about their community.
  • Our Special Place (WORD / PDF): This handout encourages students to gain a better understanding of where their community is located within Saskatchewan and about what types of things their community has to offer!

  • A Day in the Life of a Pioneer Child - A unit written for grade 3 students
    (LA). Students produce a journal highlighting the experience and lifestyle of a child growing up during pioneer times. A great unit to integrate with Social Studies then and now study.

Communities- This 10 minute movie discusses how pioneer communities changed over time to meet the needs of the people who lived in them. It also discusses how the influx of people brought new services to communtities, making them more attractive to future residents. The impact of technology on the changes in a community are also presented.
