This Web Quest is in three parts. The parts are designed and written to be done in succession, however, there is no requirement to do all three. Part One will stand alone quite nicely and takes approximately 4 Science Periods to complete. Parts Two and Three of the Web Quest, if chosen, should be done together with or without Part One. Together, they would take approximately 6 Science Periods to complete.

In Part One of the Web Quest your students, working in pairs, research and report on a famous constellation in the night sky. They then create a large poster detailing the constellation, and use it to present their findings to the class. The teacher should download and photocopy a current star chart needed prior to beginning this activity .

In Part Two, students use the internet again, this time to print a featureless chart of the night sky. They are then challenged to re-interpret the night sky, re-drawing and re-naming shapes to make a modern-day star chart.

In Part Three, students do not require the internet. They are asked to write a legend or myth describing one or more of the new shapes they have created in their Modern Day Star Chart.

This Web Quest is designed for the Sask.Ed. Curriculum to satisfy the requirement that students understand the movements of the planets and other bodies in the solar system in the Grade 8 Earth and Space Science Curriculum. The prerequisites for it include access to a computer lab, and a good working knowledge on how to use the internet.
