This Web Quest is designed to be used near the beginning of the Saskatchewan Curriculum grade 8 Earth and Space unit to satisfy the objective that students understand the movements of the planets and other bodies in the solar system. Students form science detective teams to investigate the "old world" evidence that the earth is flat and the to investigate the "new world" evidence that the earth is a sphere.
To be successful in this activity, students should be placed in mixed working groups of 3 - 4 students each and have access to the internet. After investigating both sides of the argument, each group is required to present their findings in a convincing fashion to their peers.
The Web Quest will take approximately 4 or 5 classroom science periods to complete. An Evaluation Rubric is provided.
The Conclusion page at the end of the Web Quest offers two enrichment extensions that students may wish to pursue.
