Treaty Six and You

Process

  1. Students should use the Office of the Treaty Commissioner Website and Treaty Kit in your school as main sources for research information.
  2. Form an investigation team of three members.
  3. Each of you needs to choose a task to complete for this project.
    • First Task: On the Office of the Treaty Commissioner's website, find a list of key people who played a part in Treaty negotiations. Chose two people from each side (Dominion of Canada and First Nations) and research their lives and roles in the signing of Treaty Six. Try and include pictures of them.
    • Second Task: On the OTC website read through Treaty Six and answer the questions provided on the student worksheet.
    • Saskatchewan resources play a key role in how we make our living and determine our quality of life. make a list of jobs related to our natural resources. Do a survey in your class and see how many people in your class have family members with jobs in these areas.

While conducting your research for all three tasks remeber to use resources available to you through your school and community such as interviews with family and community members, magazines, newspapers, videos, etc. You might also want to collect pictures, graphs, maps, graphics, sound clips, movie clips to use in your final report. Keep track of all the resources you use in your bibliography.

  1. Once each of you has completed your research you will want to share it with the rest of the group so that each group member understands all three areas. Decide what information is important to include in the final report.
  2. You have done well. Here is the last part. You need to consider everything you've learned and make predictions on how your life would change if Treaty Six had not been concluded in 1876. As you brainstorm ideas you might want to consider: Who would own the land and have control of the resources? Would you own the property your home is on or would you have to rent or lease it? Reserves would not exist. Where would First Nation and Non First Nation peoples live? Who would own the farms, mines, petroleum industries and benefit from their profits? Are your parents' jobs affected by the change in ownership? Would your education change in anyway? Lastly, how would you feel about these changes?
  3. It's time to write the final report. Teachers have different expectations on how reports should be submitted somake sure to follow your teacher's requests. Word processing your report will make it neater and easier to use if you are planning on creating a PowerPoint as part of your final report.
