Using
the scroll bars - centre the Perimeter Explorer in the window to your
right so that you are able to read these instruction while using the explorer.
Perimeter
is defined as the distance around an object.
Area
is defined as the number of square units it takes to cover an object completely.
The objective
of this activity is to practice determining the perimeter of a shape.
Materials:
You will need a piece of graph paper and a pencil to record your work.
Procedure:
- In the
Perimeter Explorer, enter an amount in "The area of this shape
is:___.
- Click
on DRAW NEW SHAPE. A figure will appear on the grid paper. Count the
linear units to determine the perimeter of the shape. Enter your answer
in "What is the perimeter of this shape? ___ units.
- Check
your answer. Draw the shape on your grid paper and record your answer
next to the drawing.
- REPEAT
steps 1-3 ten times. (You will have completed 10 perimeter questions
when you are done).
- Try to
use small values for area nd large values to give yourself practice
determining the perimeter for different sized shapes.
- Save your
answer sheet for your instructor.
