Etiquette of Computer Use
Most school divisions have an "Acceptable Computer Use Policy" for working on school computers. Please read the policy at the following link: Saskatoon Public Schools COMPUTER/ONLINE SERVICES ACCEPTABLE USE
Please read the above document carefully. If you have any questions about the policy which pertains to working on Saskatoon Public School computers, please ask. When you are done, send the instructor an e-mail stating you understand the "Acceptable Computer Use Policy 8210" and will abide by the policy.
Passwords:
The following are general recommendations for using computers in a school where passwords are required:
- Never share your password with another individual. You are responsible for the contents of and actions taken under your account.
- Do not write your password down.
- Do not use passwords that are easily guessed (pets names, birth date)
- Avoid passwords that are dictionary words. Mix up words with numbers.
- Do not type your password when someone is watching over your shoulder.
- If you suspect that someone has obtained your password, change it right away.
With ever increasing sensitivity to the security of networks, some companies are insisting on users having "strong passwords". A newsletter article from Microsoft about passwords explains why there is a need for using good passwords for accessing accounts and illustrates how these kind of passwords can be easily created. Please read the article.
Protect your work station:
- Never leave your immediate work area without either logging off or locking your work station. Having said this remember that your school computer is shared by many students. Don't forget to logout when you are finished for the period.
- Protect your programs and projects from viruses. All memory sticks, CD ROMS, and floppy disks should be scanned for viruses prior to being used on any machine that is, or will be connected to a school's network.
