Depending on the version of Microsoft Windows OS you are using, there will be differences in the Help files but for the most part the program does the same job.

There are also many other third party software developers who have written file defragmentation programs. Many bundle this kind of utility with other file management and operating system maintenance utilities. An appropriate query of a search engine will direct you to these third party software developers. For openers you might try, "disk defragmenter" (without the quotation marks) in the Google search engine.

What if something goes wrong in the process?

Computer systems are very complicated. Software failure, hardware failure and operator errors happen all the time. Get used to it! Be patient. It's important to have a strategy when these things happen. Banging your head against the wall, whereas it might give you short-term cathartic relief, usually doesn't help the situation and besides giving you a headache you could also accidentally knock the all important electrical cord out of the wall complicating matters even more. 'Nuff said.

In general, your list of resources include the following:

  • Read the operating instructions and trouble-shooting guides for help.
  • Read the online Help menu. Use keywords to search the Help files for the articles relating to the processes you are working with.
  • Go online. Use the internet search engines to find help relating to your problem. Checking the vendors sights for FAQs pages, updates, and trouble-shooting guides can usually find solution to problems.
  • Check discussion forums addressing the problem.
  • You may find knowledgeable, computer savvy, persons within your school to help you problem-solve an issue.

You may be able to think of other resources not mentioned here.
