How to Use This Website:

This site was created with the one computer classroom in mind. Therefore, the interactive elements within this site (tour, presentations, quizzes and games) are designed for teacher use as an instructional tool (i.e. projecting the interactive tour using a data projector) or as one of several center activities (i.e. at the computer center students take the tour while other students complete all or some of the additional center activities found in the Online Kit). This site may also be used as a research center for students working on Saskatoon related projects.

Take what you need from this site, modify it if need be (all files are available in WORD or PDF format), and print it off for immediate use!

Educational Objectives: (Taken from the Evergreen Curriculum Guide - Social Studies)

• Grade 1: Unit 2 - Module 2: Families in the Past- Consider the Family Tree Activity. Learn about the homes that the Trounce and Marr families resided in when they first settled in Saskatoon. For more activities, see SaskEd suggested activites.
• Grade 2: Unit 2: Heritage - Module Two - The Local Community Then and Now View the Remember Me Movie (Local War Heroes) and The Historical Overview Movie to learn about the evolution of Saskatoon. For more activites, see SaskEd suggested activites. View this site (Okotoks, Alberta) to see possible activites for various sections of the curriculum.
• Grade 3: Unit 2: Identity Module One - Communities Then and Now - Take the Interactive Tour of Saskatoon's Historical Buildings, Watch the Historical Overview Movie to learn about Saskatoon's evolution, dig in to the activites in the Online Kit to supplement learning. Unit 3: Interdependence - Consider how the railway (a service) changed the growth of Saskatoon (see the Online Kit and The Historical Overview Movie ). To see more activites, view the suggested activites from SaskEd. Compare the communities of Saskatoon and Okotoks, Alberta (this site was done as a Grassroots project). Take a look at Victoria School students on the tour. See the Victoria School Mural - ask students to identify the paintings!
• Grade 4: Identity: Module 2: Use this website as a spring board for student research when looking at various communities and cities throughout Saskatchewan. Identity: Module 3: View the Remember Me movie to learn about local war heroes and memorials throughout Saskatoon. To see more activites, view the suggested activities from SaskEd.
• Grade 7 - Structures & Design - Saskatoon - City of Bridges - This site features MVA's Tales Presentation, a structures and design webquest and a powerpoint slide show that teaches perspective using the Bridges of Saskatoon.

You may wish to bookmark these sites on your classroom computer so that your students are able to do independent research on Saskatoon's History.

• City of Saskatoon Archives: This website contains a brief (but informative) history of Saskatoon, a time line of significant dates in Saskatoon's history, and a list & photograph of all of Saskatoon's Mayors.
• Saskatoon's Biggest Marine Disaster, The Day the Train Fell into the River from Saskatoon Public Library's Local History Page. This site contains some quirky facts and interesting stories about historical events.
• Virtual Saskatchewan: A travel and leisure e-zine featuring the people and places of Saskatchewan.
• Digital Saskatchewan: Teachers make create tours for students and search a database of photos and video.
• Victoria School - Learn more about the history of Victoria School and see the photos from a third grader field tour of historical Nutana.See their trip.
  

Suggestions for Use:

• The Interactive Tour may be used by small groups of students at a computer center, or used with a data projector to allow all students to take the tour at once. The supplemental activities, found in the Online Kit, may be used as additional center activities or as reinforcement of particular concepts.
• The Online Kit: Help yourself to any of the handouts created to provide extended learning opportunities. The handouts can be downloaded and modified to meet your needs. Also view the activites created by the Meewasin Valley Interpretive Centre.
• Introduction to the History of Saskatoon: This flash movie can be viewed at a computer center or projected (using a data projector) for the entire class to view. Movie script can be printed for your future reference. Flash Player required - see requirements page for download link.
• Remember Me - A movie about Saskatoon's local war heroes and memorials.
• Photo Album: The album has a good selection of photos that can be downloaded for use making teaching resources or using in student projects.
