Create an Inquiry Plan
To create your one page inquiry plan, you will need your notes
from Step Two and the Inquiry Plan Worksheet. Follow the step-by-step
directions to complete your plan. The numbers below correspond
to the numbers for the information you will fill in on the Inquiry
Plan Worksheet.
- Framing your question (My question is): Consider
everything you've done with your question since you did this
exercise in Step Two. Write out the current version of your
question in a concise sentence. (You may still change your question
as you begin investigating, experimenting and gathering evidence;
but you need a question to guide you at this point.)
- Screening the question:Explain how studying your
question will advance learning and teaching in your classroom.
What curriculum and instruction is involved?
- Checking Feasibility: Record the collections of evidence
you believe you will need to answer your question. Remember
that one source of evidence must come from your students. Consider
also triangulation of evidence (product, observation, conversation).
Also, will you need baseline data (which would be a separate
collection of information) to document any change in your student
learning?
- Actions: What are some of the actions you will take in your
inquiry? Will you need to do some reading? Collaborate with
a colleague?
- Connect to Research and Practice: Who are a few of
the leading researchers in your field? What are some of the
key resources? This will give you a starting point to your investigation.
- Identify a Critical Friend: You may wish to ask one
or two people in your learning community to be a critical friend(s),
someone you respect and trust with whom you can have a professional
dialogue about your inquiry study. You may also wish to have
a colleague who is not in the group to be another critical friend.
It is desirable to have at least two critical friends, one outside
of your discipline and one or two who are in your discipline.
