Overview

This MY PIC (Middle Years Professional Inquiry Cycle) website has been designed as a tool to enhance teacher and student learning in the area of literacy as part of the Literacy for Life initiative.

The inquiry evolved as teachers and teacher-librarians attempted to define and create “independent readers” in their classroom(s). Through a process of co-constructing criteria around the definition of the “independent reader”, four criteria emerged. Independent readers:

  1. Show a love of reading.
  2. Choose to read.
  3. Read a large volume.
  4. Demonstrate the skills and strategies of independent readers.

From these criteria, two strands of professional learning emerged:

Strand 1: Love, Choose, Volume
Strand 2: Skills and Strategies

Teachers then reflected on student learning and enrolled in the strand of learning most pertinent to student achievement in their classroom. The MY PIC website was designed as a professional development tool to guide teachers through a professional inquiry into one question within their chosen strand.
