Refraction of Water Waves

Go to water waves refraction and refraction of water waves.

1. What causes water waves to refract or change directions in shallow water?

2. What causes the water to slow down in shallow areas?

3. Since the frequency of the waves (wind, etc. that initially creates the wave) stays constant, and the speed gets slower, what happens to the wavelength? Does this make sense by looking at the wave equation?

4. Draw a sketch from water waves refraction. Be sure to make the wavelength smaller in the shallow section.
