Description (from Crossroads Series)

The poet Paul Valery said, "I write half the poem. The reader writes the other half." Throughout this unit, students will be asked to "write the other half" of many different poems. They should be given the opportunity to read and explore the poems of a diverse group of poets who represent a broad range of cultural and historical experiences and perspectives.

Beneath the Ink will help students develop a sense of themselves as readers and writers, as they write poetry, create ads, prepare a readers' theatre, present choral readings and work cooperatively to complete long-term assignments.

• Writing with Writers - Poetry - students study the genre of poetry by taking part in step-by-step workshops with favorite authors. Then they can publish their poems online in Scholastic's Poetry Anthology or I Spy Riddle Library.
• Reader's Theatre - from Gander Academy comes everything you wanted to know about Reader's Theatre plus a myrida of helpful links.
• Bartleby Verse - This site includes American and English poetry from 1250-1920. All poems are full-text and public domain.
• Teen Poetry - Students may enjoy perusing this site that allows teens to post their original poems and read the works of others.
• Poetry Writing with Karla Kuskin - Have your students meet the author, then sit back and relax for this poetry workshop, a sure way to have fun in the process of creative writing. A Teacher's Guide is included, along with assessment and rubrics guidelines.
• Poetry Contests - For a selection of poetry contests to encourage your students to write and publish, see this site for ongoing competitions.
• Alliteration in Headline Poems - Students will be introduced to the term alliteration. They will be given examples of alliteration and asked to create their own examples of alliteration. As a project, students will be asked to create a headline poem consisting of 25 words that contain at least three examples of alliteration.
