Description

"Memories" provides opportunities for students to explore their reactions to poetry as readers, writers, listeners, and presenters.

A key focus throughout this unit should be on writing poetry and responding to poetry written by other students. Students should be encouraged to shape their own interpretations and responses to the poems they read and hear through reflection and discussion. Students should be made aware that while there are many ways of interpreting a particular poem, some interpretations are defensible and others are not. They must be prepared to offer evidence from the poem to support their interpretations.

Stated and Didactic Themes - Starting with a discussion of fairy tales the students are familiar with, students discuss and learn what underlying messages might be implied (didactic themes) in these tales.
Bartleby Verse - This site includes American and English poetry from 1250-1920. All poems are full-text and public domain.
Poetry Writing with Karla Kuskin - Have your students meet the author, then sit back and relax for this poetry workshop, a sure way to have fun in the process of creative writing. A Teacher's Guide is included, along with assessment and rubrics guidelines.

Web Quests

Poetry Web Quest - Students are the employees of a calendar company. their company has chosen four of them to create a Poetry Calendar for the year 2001. Each employee must choose one of the poets from a list. Then they must research your poet's life and work. Finally each group compiles all of their research and information into one calendar.
