The Web Sites listed here have been selected to complement and enrich your teaching
of the ELA Middle Years Language Arts Curriculum in the Grade 9 Representing
Strand.

Lesson/Unit Plans
- Career
Exploration for the Middle School Student - This is a technology-based
career guidance project during which students select a career to research
on the Internet. Students will create slide show presentations of information
on selected careers and present the slide shows to the class.
- Got

- Students will study then produce compact disc cover designs for singles
for a new artist (group or solo performer), with each cover featuring lyrics
and design elements which fit the artist's image. Students then write for
Tearaway about their artists and their CDs.
- Making
Movies
- Students produce an original short video after first studying the construction
of other selected television texts.
- Destination
Unknown - A visual language series of lessons, based upon the theme of
travel, which culminates in students producing Powerpoint presentations about
their chosen destinations.
- Documentary
Viewing - These lessons are designed to teach the concept of documentary
as 'constructed reality'. Students view, respond to and analyze news and documentary
programmes.
- Seuss
and Silverstein: Posing Questions, Presenting Points - Picture books and
short stories by Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein are written on an elementary
level, yet they contain powerful social and personal messages. In this lesson,
high school students work in groups to read a book or short story by Seuss
or Silverstein, prepare thought-provoking questions, and lead a class discussion.
- The
Peace Journey: Using Process Drama in the Classroom
- Process drama is a powerful and motivating teaching tool that engages students
in writing. In this lesson, high school students participate in a simulated
peace journey as they pursue various literacy activities. They will plan,
write, and perform a skit based on their ideas of peace.
