This unit, usually given at the beginning of a school year, gives students the opportunity to explore who they are and to find out more about their classmates. Selections should reflect on what makes us individuals and how our family and family history help to shape our identities.

Student may read anecdotes, poems and short stories, as well as view comic strips and art essays. They might be given the opportunities to develop knowledge and literacy skills, such as experimenting with metaphor, examining the elements of fiction, using symbolism, analyzing artwork, or creating a self-portrait.
