Description

The business plan of most organizations includes a statement about the identity it wants to project. This identity frequently manifests itself in a logo and in the design and tone of the organization's communications.

"Image and Information" provides opportunities for students to analyse the design elements in logos and newsletter and use the samples as models to help them design their own.

The task of producing a newsletter is an ideal whole-class or group project that requires students to use a broad range of language skills and strategies.

Web Resources

• Designing a Logo - A series of four lessons in word format where students have to produce a visual rough of a logo, and then produce it using MS Paint or the 'Drawing' toolbar in Word (2000 in this instance). Three 'Quick Guides' are included on how to use Paint, WordDraw and designing a logo.
• Creating Logos for Business - similar to the above lesson plan, students learn about logos and then design one on the computer
• Logo Logic - although written for grades 5/6 these lessons are more detailed and can be adapted
• You Can't Sell This Thing - Teams of students design and create a logo / trademark, packaging box, and poster for advertising their new invention. They then present their new product and design to the class. This is a PDF file.
• Classroom Newsletter Template - A series of web links designed to help teachers design a classroom newsletter

Web Quests

• Cyvertise Web Quest - Students form design teams and are given the task of coming up with a product, which considers the environment, is cost effective, and appeals to high school students. They advertise the product and develop a multimedia ad campaign.
