In this unit, students have opportunities to develop their skills for researching, summarizing, evaluating, reporting on information and critical thinking.

Students should be invited to share some of the current predictions and speculations of futurists and to evaluate predictions from the past. Throughout the unit, encourage students to apply thinking and problem-solving skills to research and evaluate sources of information about the future.

This unit offers a number of connections to science, technology, social studies, and environmental studies. Through their own research, students can also make connections to predictions about future developments and issues in other areas, including the arts.

• Predicting the Future - a lesson plan where students make a time line of inventions over the past 100 years
• My Future Life - Students explore various ways of predicting the future, then write their autobiographies from the perspective of 2050.
• When I Grow Up - Students explore their interests and abilities and learn about careers they might want to pursue.
• The Future of Technology - Students explore historical predictions about technology and design a technology product they think will be available in 2025.
• Schools of the Future - Students learn how technology might change education in the future and design a school environment that would best accommodate those changes.
