LESSON 1 - CLINGER

Background:

Part One: This is a motivating activity that is a fun way to introduce magnets. At this point, there is no discussion or teaching.

Part Two: This activity allows students to reflect and analyze the possibility of having a paper clip as a pet and experience the effects of magnets on paper clips through play.

Objective: Motivational set for magnet unit.

Vocabulary: No new vocabulary at this point

Quick Peek:This is simply a quick activity perhaps best suited for the last period of the day. It is light and fun to do and does not take a lot of time.

Part One Clinger

Materials: paper clip, string, pictures and objects that represent pets, pictures and objects that do not represent pets

Method:

1. Attach a string to the paper clip. It should be long enough for the teacher to drag
the paper clip on the floor.

2. Walk into the room pulling your pet paper clip.

3. Use concept attainment to develop the concept of a pet. Ask the students to listen carefully as you show them some ``yes`` items and some ``no`` items. Students should be able to conclude that your concept is a pet. When students ask about the paper clip, explain that it is your new pet. Tell the students that you named your pet Clinger. (You may also let the students use a voting system to name your pet.)

4. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having a paper clip as a pet.

Part Two Clinger

Materials: p
aper clip and string for teacher (from part one), paper clips - one per child, string, one magnet pet child, overhead projector

Method:

1. Review discussion of pets. Talk about how some pets can do tricks. Explain to the students that Clinger is also capable of doing tricks. Using a magnet, demonstrate a few tricks on the overhead projector.

2. Provide the students with their own pet paper clip and string. Students name their pets and then using a magnet train it to do tricks.

Assessment: Informal observation
