LESSON 10: THE PET VET

Background:
An owner’s job is to protect their pet from sickness, and it is the owner’s responsibility to take their pet to the veterinarian for yearly immunizations or if it becomes ill.

Objective:
Describe the basic needs of animals.
The students will identify a pet’s basic needs.

Vocabulary: veterinarian

Quick Peek:
The children learn about the work of a veterinarian and the importance of keeping pets safe and healthy.

Materials: Invite a veterinarian to visit the classroom and explain that the children will be learning about pet care and their basic needs.
chart paper
marker
white paper
pencils
crayons/pencil crayons/markers

Method:

1. Tell the children that they will have a visit from a pet doctor or veterinarian. Engage the children in a discussion by asking them to share what they know about veterinarians. Have they ever taken their pet to a veterinarian?
2. Work together to prepare questions for the visit. What would they like to learn or know more about? Write each child’s name on chart paper and record his/her question. Leave space underneath for the veterinarian’s response.
3. During the veterinarian’s visit, invite each child to ask his or her particular question. The teacher can record the veterinarian’s response as he or she answers each question. Engage the children in a discussion about whether or not animals and humans have similar needs.
4. After the visit, invite the children to write and draw about the veterinarian’s visit. They may use the question and answer chart created as a guide.
5. Send a copy of the children’s work to the veterinarian along with a thank you note from the children.

*A good book to read before or after the veterinarian’s visit: Veterinarians by Dee Ready.
