LESSON 17 – ANIMAL BABIES

Background: Most animals progress through a life cycle that includes birth, reproduction and death. Some traits characterize an animal throughout its life cycle, while other traits change as the animal grows and matures.

Objective: Describe the physical changes of several animals from the newly
hatched or born to the mature adult.

Vocabulary: traits

Quick Peek: The children listen to a story that compares various animal traits and they match baby animals to their parents.

Materials:
Book -- "You Don't Look Like Your Mother, Said the Robin to the Fawn" by Aileen Fisher
babies and adults worksheets
crayons
glue

Method:

1. Read the story. Discuss. Hand out pictures of baby animals and adults. Have students colour them.
2. Ask the children to match the adults to their young and glue them in pairs.
3. Discuss and compare while observing the pairs created:
Example: How do animals stay the same as they grow?
They have the same number of legs.
How do they change?
They become bigger, stronger, and heavier.
