LESSON 3 – ANIMAL SHAPES

Background: Animals come in all shapes and sizes.

Objective:
Observe and describe many types of animals.
Classify animals on the basis of their size.

Quick Peek: This activity allows the students to make an analysis of animal characteristics through cut, paste and find activities.

Materials:
scrapbooks
glue
scissors
pencils
scavenger hunt worksheet

Method:

1. Have each student make a scrapbook of animal pictures. Pictures can be cut from magazines, newspapers, old books, etc. Old Chickadee and Your Big Backyard magazines are great sources as they have wonderful real life animal pictures! Allow approximately 20 minutes for the children to create an adequate assortment of pictures.
2. Tell the children that they are now going to go on a scavenger hunt through their scrapbook.
3. Pass out the Animal Scavenger Hunt worksheet and read through what they are required to find. Post an animal chart on the wall displaying the spelling of various animal names, so that this will not hinder their enthusiasm for the activity.

*Creating a collage of the animal pictures you have collected over the years, labeling them, and putting them up on a wall will prove to be invaluable as you teach your unit!
