LESSON
6 – ANIMAL FRIENDS
Background:
People use animals for many different things and animals play varying
roles in our daily lives.
Objective:
Observe and describe many types of animals.
Classify animals on the basis of their relationship to humans.
Quick Peek:
By identifying animals which are tame and wild, the children come to understand
that we use these animals in many different ways. The students make a
poster which represents their findings.
Vocabulary:
wild, tame, companionship
Materials:
animal pictures of wild and tame animals
old magazines
bristle board
fun tak
scissors
glue
Method:
1.
Print two headings on the chalkboard Ü Yes/No
2. Fun tak a picture of a bear under “No”. Put a picture of
a dog under “Yes”. Continue by putting a picture of a fox
under “No” and a picture of a cat under “Yes”.
3. Now hold up a picture of a deer. Ask: “Where should I put it,
under ‘Yes’ or ‘No’?” “Why?”
4. Continue this process using about 3 or 4 more examples. Ask: “Why
do these animals fit where they do?” (One set is wild animals, the
other tame.)
5. Discuss how people use the animals on the tame side (ie. companionship),
and how each of the animals on the wild side are of use to people. (ie.
food, clothing, etc.)
6. Distribute old magazines. Have the students cut out as many different
pictures as they can find that show how animals help people.
Examples: pillow Ü feathers (geese)
sweater Ü wool (sheep)
7. At the front of the room fun tak a piece of bristle board to the chalkboard
and label it “Animals Help Us” and have the students come
up and glue on their pictures as they find them.
