LESSON 7: ANIMAL SORT

Background:
Scientists put things that are alike into groups called categories and give each category a name.

Objective:
Observe and describe many types of animals.
Recognize that there are several ways in which the same set of animals may be classified.

Vocabulary: categories

Quick Peek: The students do what scientists do – they put things that are alike into categories and give each category a name while coming to the realization that the same animal can fall into many different categories.

Materials: animal picture cards (photocopy one set to be used at the front of the class)

Method:

1. Reproduce the attached animal cards
2. Show the pictures of the bear cub and the duck.
3. Ask the students to name the pictures.
4. Have two students each hold a picture.
5. Say, “I’m going to show some more pictures. Your job is to decide whether each picture goes with the bear cub or with the duck.”
6. Once completed, ask the students to tell why the animals in each set go together.
7. Complete the activity again by having two different students hold up the same two cards.
8. Sort according to some other criteria.
9. Explain that they have just done something a scientist does – they have put things that are alike into groups called categories and given each category a name.
