LESSON 8 – OFF TO PETLAND

Background:
Petland is an excellent place for children to see the many varieties of pets which one can own. The staff at Confederation Park are excellent with the children and are full of knowledge.

Objectives:
Describe the basic needs of animals.
The students will identify animals which make good pets.

Vocabulary: domestic, exotic

Quick Peek: A class trip to Petland is a perfect opportunity for the students to see a variety of different kinds of pets and allow them to identify which ones would make good pets in their home.

Materials:
name tags
parent volunteers
good field trip manners
chart paper
marker
graph (prepared ahead of time based on the list created the day before)
pencils

Method:

1. Phone Petland and book your field trip. Discuss what the children will see and do.
2. Before going on the field trip, ask the students if they have ever been to Petland and what will we expect to see there?
3. Enjoy the learning experience! The staff at Petland in Confederation Park Mall are fantastic. The children will be exposed to a wide variety of animals that would make great pets.
4. Following the field trip, create a chart listing all the pets that the children remember seeing and touching.
5. The following day distribute the graph (prepared ahead of time with the appropriate number of animals, based on the list created the previous day) and have the children go over all the pets that they saw during their visit to Petland. Be sure to have the picture of the pet, along with its name underneath. Please see sample attached.
6. Next, ask the students to move around the room and visit all of their classmates once. Each classmate is to shade in a box beside the animal they would most like to have for a pet.
7. Analyze the data the students gathered.
8. Send a thank-you letter to Petland.

*Kids can adopt a cyberpet at www.kidsfreeware.com. But, they must remember to take care of him! A good book: Daddy, Could I Have An Elephant? by Jake Wolf.
