Interactions
with Ecosystems
- Earthweek
- This site reports on significant environmental events
that occur on Earth for the current week.
- Biodiversity
- Preserving biological diversity and what can be done,
with a link to a forestry quiz.
- Acid
Rain
- Read about the facts of acid rain including case studies.
Click on Kids' Corner for an explanation of the pH scale.
- Hazardous
Waste in the Home
- An on-line test of students' WHMIS knowledge.
- How
to Save the Planet
- Students put together a booklet of ways to save the environment.
- 30
Good Reasons for Trees
- Students create their own book of ideas about saving the
environment.
- Related
Links - Grade
Six Ecosystems - A resources sheet with related website
links. (For secondary students see Sustainable
Ecosystems - Prairie Links - A resources sheet with
related website links.)
Physical
Science - Mixtures and Solutions
- Properties
of Matter
- a student site providing information all aspects of the
properties of matter. Very easy for students to navigate.
- Fact
Monster (Mixture). - Teacher’s resource page,
explaining mixtures and defining homogeneous/heterogeneous
mixtures with information on suspensions and solutions.
- Elements,
Compounds and Mixtures. - Contains various definitions
(Vocabulary: element, compound, mixture, heterogeneous,
homogeneous, solution, suspension and colloid). Great teacher
resource.
Heat
& Temperature
- Kinetic
Molecular Theory
Use as a teachers resource which helps describe solid, liquid,
gas, matter and molecules. ***Has a wonderful link to thousands
of web sites that are set up for student labs.
- Kinetic
Molecular Theory With Popcorn.
The object of the game is to use popcorn kernels as molecules
and the margarine as the bonding forces between them. Heating
produces physical changes in the popcorn-margarine mixture
which are analogous to the melting and boiling of matter.
- Heat
and Temperature
This is a unit on Heat and Temperature. There are lesson
plans and experiments.
- About
Temperature
This site explains about temperature, thermometers, temperature
scales, thermodynamics, and the Kinetic theory.
Earth's
Crust and Resources
- All
About Glaciers - Explore nearly all aspects of glaciers
including data and science, facts, a gallery, a glossary
and much more.
- Illustrated
Glossary of Alpine Glacial Landforms - This site presents
basic definitions and examples of common alpine glacial
landforms.
- The
Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan:Saskatchewan Geology -
Explains the geological history of Saskatchewan.
- Quaternary
Geology of Saskatchewan - This site provides information
on the Quaternary period in the last glacial event known
as the Wisconsinan. There are pictures of the effects of
this.
- Mountain
Makers, Earth Shakers - This site has a visual, which
you can manipulate to simulate/demonstrate what happens
when plates move. Has links to other web sites to help explain
plate tectonics. Great!
- USGS
Earthquakes for Kids Site
- Information about earthquakes, a glossary of terms, latest
quakes, online activities, quizzes, word search puzzles,
science fair project ideas
- US
Geological Survey - Earthquake Hazards Program
- Information about earthquakes, a glossary of terms, latest
quakes, online activities, quizzes, word search puzzles,
science fair project ideas.
-
Science
Vocabulary Connection - A cross curricular science/spelling
lesson about Plate Tectonics
- Volcano
World - The Web's Premier Source of Volcano Information
contains current eruptions, historic volcanic eruptions,
images of volcanoes as QuickTime movies.
- Principal
Types of Volcanoes - USGS article on the various types
of volcanoes. How they are formed, what they look like,
examples of each type
- Earthforce
- Volcanoes erupt, the crust quakes, and rivers rage. EARTHFORCE
is everywhere.
- Volcano
Lesson Plans
- from VolcanoWorld comes this page designed to provide
students and teachers with lessons about volcanoes. Even
if you are not a formal student or teacher you might find
something interesting.
- Research
Project
- Students' mission is to find information and report on
a volcano that has erupted in the last 100 years.
- Surfing
for Earthquakes and Volcanoes - Students use the Internet
to research data on earthquakes and volcanoes and plot locations
to determine continental plate boundaries
- Volcanoes
and the Ring of Fire Web Quest - In this WebQuest, students
complete Internet research on the ring of fire and its associated
volcanoes. Students learn more about plate tectonics and
about the different types of plate boundaries. They learn
why more active volcanoes are located along the edges of
the Pacific Plate. They find out which volcanoes are active,
and where these volcanoes are located. They prepare a table
and compile information for at least five active volcanoes.
Finally, they draw simple maps and locate each of the volcanoes
listed in their tables on their maps.
- Volcanoes
Web Quest
- Students are to search this webquest for the answers to
the questions on the Think Sheet. They are also expected
to participate in a classroom discussion about your findings
on volcanoes.
