Unit Resources and Web Links -
these links are from Sask.Learning and are written to complement
the unit
- Chemistry
and You
- Eleven lessons for grade 9 chemistry. Students will learn
to read some formula equations used to describe chemical
reactions, and to understand the purpose of such equations.
They identify the chemical names of substances used in everyday
life, and appreciate the dependence that Canadian society
has on both natural and synthetic chemicals.
- Canadian
Chemistry Links - a comprehensive list of Canadian Chemistry
Web Sites. The list is organized by subject and place. Each
entry is annotated with a sentence or two rating the site
and usually includes a quote from the site itself.
- Chemistry

of chemistry lesson plan links
- Chemical
Carousel: A Trip Around the Carbon Cycle
- This site illustrates the carbon cycle and explains that
carbon doesn't ever really die--it just recycles itself.
Follow Captain Carbon on his adventures through various
cycles. The Protein Cycle features articles on photosynthesis
and amino acid synthesis in a plant, and protein synthesis
in a cow. The Carbohydrate/Fuel Cycle features articles
on farming and wheat processing plus what happens when humans
turn Captain Carbon into glucose via the digestive process.
- Chemistry
Documents - these documentsare from Sask.Learning and
are written to complement the unit
- Understanding
Chemistry - Science Notes
- an excellent set of study notes and diagrams for students
taking this unit
- Understanding
Chemistry - Science Review - an excellent review to
help students prepare for a test on this unit.
- Understanding
Chemistry - Review Quiz
- A practice quiz based on the above study notes and review
- Element
Research Project - This lesson was designed for general
level chemistry students as an introduction to the periodic
table and/or the elements. It involves having the students
research the answers to several questions concerning the
origin of the periodic table, naming of the elements, and
basis for some of the element's names.
- "Elements
Necessary for Life" Project
- This project was designed for general level chemistry
students as a way to help them see the importance of many
of the elements in their lives.
- Our
Favorite Element
- Students learn some of the properties and uses of common
elements
- How
Stuff Works
- How
Atoms Work - Explains the structure of the atom
as well as the effects of understanding it's composition
on modern science.
- How
Diamonds Work - Elements and properties of substances.
This site has excellent diagrams and the information
is detailed, yet easy to comprehend.
- How
Fireworks Work - Explains the chemistry behind how
fireworks work. Students may be familiar with many of
the chemicals used to make fireworks.
- How
Fuel Cells Work - Explains the chemistry behind
how fuel cells work, their efficiency, a comparison
between this and other types of car fuels, and it's
uses.
- Is
Carbon Hard or Soft? - Elements - Explains in simple
terms how carbon molecules differ. Simple experiment students
can do to better understand.
- MathMol
K-12 Activity Page - Excellent website provides information
about volume, density, mass, atomic structure, molecules
etc. Step-by-step instructions with pictures.
- WebElementsTM
periodic table Scholar edition - Periodic table of the
elements. You will find many pictures showing element structures
and periodic properties.
Characteristics
of Electricity
- Using
Electricity - Science Notes - an excellent set of study
notes and diagrams for students taking this unit
- Using
Electricity - Science Review
- an excellent review to help students prepare for a test
on this unit.
- Using
Electricity Review Quiz - A practice quiz based on the
above study notes and review
- Understanding
Electricity
- a comprehensive lab where students learn about current
electricity, conductors, insulators, how hydroelectricity
and a simple electromagnet are made. Includes links to other
sites as well.
- Electricity
Web Quest - students are given a number of choices in
this web quest. They work in teams of four to collect information
on electricity topics. The information is then presented
to the class.
- How
Batteries Work - Excellent diagrams that show how batteries
work as well as their various chemical compositions and
uses.
- Sask
Power Emissions - Atmospheric emissions relating to
climate change.
