  • Examination of Historical Photographs (WORD / PDF): Students will examine historical photographs of families, children, and schools. Students will compare these photographs to their own families and will explain and discuss the differences and similarities. (Viewing Guides - documents designed to walk someone through the examination and analysis of a photograph).
  • Where Did My Family Come From? Family Celebrations (WORD / PDF): Students will be exposed to the history of families that settled in Saskatchewan and will examine their own family heritage. Students will examine family celebrations and learn to understand how they came about. Read about the life of Fred Dalby - an early pioneer.   • Family Rituals and Special Traditions (WORD / PDF): Students will use a timeline (weekly and seasonal) to gain a better understanding of the special rituals and family traditions that they take part in throughout the week and year.

  • Families on Display: An Introduction to the Study of Families - A lesson plan easily adaptable to any primary grade.
  • Create a Family Crest - Children can begin to think about their family histories and their own lives by making a family crest.

  • A Day in the Life of a Pioneer Child - A unit written for grade 3 students
    (LA). Students produce a journal highlighting the experience and lifestyle of a child growing up during pioneer times. A great unit to integrate with Social Studies then and now study.

Online Activities

  • Introductory lessons in genealogy will help students appreciate their own personal past by identifying significant people, places and events. Links from these elements to key elements in Canadian history will also give students a better understanding of their Canadian identity and of the diversity of Canada's people. (Grades 3,4,5 through 8).
  • Try your hand at this puzzle of a pioneer hunter. It is tricky so follow these suggestions!

    To do this puzzle:1) Examine the picture before you hit SCRAMBLE so you know what it is suppose to look like when put back together. 2) Hit SCRAMBLE. 3) Try putting the picture back together. When you have a piece in the right position, the checkmark will appear in the grid to tell you to leave it there because it is correct.

  • Family Cloze Activity - Students fill in the blanks to complete an information page on families.

Pioneer Families, Schooling and Recreation - This 15 minute movie discusses life and roles in pioneer families, pioneer schooling and early modes of transportation, and the importance of recreation and social connections during pioneer times.
