Identity - Unit 1

They will learn that people are similar and different in various ways. Have a discussion about things they like to do in Saskatoon and then compare to others.

All About Me: Favourite things I like to do in Saskatoon. Things To Do In Saskatoon (Word search) After a discussion about what they like to do, have students use a Venn Diagram to compare their likes with others in the class.

 

 

Heritage - Unit 2

Students will know that families express their cultures through traditions, rituals and celebrations.

 

**Arthur's Site on celebrations around the world is a great resource at this level.

Family Celebrations: Family Rituals and Special Traditions: Students will use a timeline (weekly and seasonal) to gain a better understanding of the special rituals and family traditions that they take part in throughout the week and year.

Holiday Celebrations: A great way to review their winter holiday celebrations.

First Nations Families - First Nations peoples had a deep spiritual connection to nature long ago. Today, some of these connections still remain an important part of First Nations culture.

Homes of the Past - The Plains Cree people lived in homes that were related to their lifestyles. Also watch Home Sweet Home (5th movie on the list) to view information on early pioneer homes.

Identity, Unit One - Module Three - Weather and Seasons in Our Community

Students will know that weather and seasonal changes influence a community.

Saskatoon Seasons: How does the weather influence what you can do in the community (seasonal activities).

  • Describe weather/seasons in our community. Chart and organize information as to weather and clothing and activities one could do in Saskatoon.

Heritage - Schools Then and Now

Students will know that the school has evolved over time.

Watch Pioneer Families, Schooling and Recreation - This 15 minute movie discusses life and roles in pioneer families, pioneer schooling and early modes of transportation, and the importance of recreation and social connections during pioneer times. To exit at any time, hit ESC.

 

Decision Making - Community Government

Students will know that elected people have specific roles and that people in local governments make decisions.

Introduction to City Council. A lesson plan that introduces students to the basics of local government and the role of the people within it. Quiz.

Interdependence - Meeting Needs through Industry and Service

Students will know that industries and services help meet the needs and wants of a community

Services and Industries: This activity will examine the way that increased services and industry serve to meet the needs of the people and encourage growth. Through webbing and simulation students gain an understanding of interdependence.

Review what the students know about their own families. Consider size, parents, siblings, ages, housing, and property (yard or farm). They can compare their family of present day with their families of the past.

Consider making Saskatoon Alphabet Books using our history as the inspiration for your ABC words. Pair words up with images (students created or take some from our gallery). These books can be as complicated or as simple as your grade level allows. Use your imagination.

Grade Four – Unit Two – Heritage (Module Three - Immigrants and Settlers)

Students will know that:

  • immigrants came to this province for a variety of reasons.
  • immigrants brought with them their own cultures.
  • interactions among peoples resulted in change .
  • Students will examine their own family history and their stories of immigration and settlement.

Métis History & Genealogy Resources

Tour Nutana Pioneer Cemetery by watching History Carved in Stone - (32MB-12 min.) A fully automated and narrated (.exe file) presentation that looks at the graves in the Nutana Cemetery. This presentation discusses the hardships that the pioneers faced and illustrates how difficult and short their lives often were. Content and images provided by Meewasin Valley Centre. Home Sweet Home: This 14 minute presentation explores the homes of the early 1900s and looks at the evolution of the prairie home from soddy to shack. Content and images provided by the Saskatchewan Western Development Museum. To exit the presentation at any time, hit ESC.

5 Understanding coordinates on a map. Mapping Activities - A series of three interactive, Flash based activities helping students understand how gridlines aid us in finding locations on maps. Identity

Students develop a sense of identity as they explore who they are culturally. They define and develop their roles within Canada's multicultural society, and learn why Canada is often call "a nation of immigrants," including their own immigration story.
