Environmental Resources Created to gather resources, lesson plans, activities and related links that cover the topics of waste reduction, water management, energy consumption, recycling, reusing, and reducing consumption.

 

 October Resources - "Fall" back on some favorite teaching ideas for the Autumn,  Thanksgiving, Pumpkins, Bats and Halloween.....

  

Suggestions for Using The Resources in the Classroom:

 

  • Consider using a digital projector to project the multimedia items for entire class viewing (Flash movies, interactive tours, graphing activities, etc).
  • Many of the sites have printable resources for students and teacher facilitated lesson plans.
  • Send home website addresses connected to your classroom topics in your newsletters or list them on your classroom websites. Parents and students can explore the sites from home.
  • Consider assigning websites for additional practice, a place to begin research, or as an enrichment activity. 
  • Use online resources as CARE partner activities.

 

 

Web Sites for Teachers and Students

 

  • Making a Difference - Carol Ann Tomlinson explains how differentiated instruction works and why we need it now.
  • Culturally Responsive Teaching -  What is culturally responsive teaching,  stories, research and resources.
  • Funds of Knowledge - Teachers can use "funds of knowledge," the knowledge students gain from their family and cultural backgrounds, to make their classrooms more inclusive.
  • Research Matters / Successful Strategies for English Language Learners – What we know and what we can learn
  • Mystery Quests - Use the popular WebQuest format as students develop their detection skills to solve the historical mysteries. Divided into ages – 11-14; 14- 16; 16-18.
  • Canadian History on the Web – A website to help locate Canadian history on the web
  • Odyssey Online's Greece  - An interactive site that uses historical artifacts to explain concepts essential to the study of ancient Greece.
  • National Geographic Education - This site is extensive for students and educators alike. Features:
    • Online Adventures - students can click through a series of pictures of vanishing cultures and an online Congo trek with renowned conservationists.
    • Xpedition Hall - an interactive online museum
    • Sustainable Seas - helps students gain an understanding of marine sanctuaries,
    • Maps and Charts - printable maps of almost everywhere you can imagine, and it also includes star charts for constellations and a Virtual Solar System.
    • Lesson Plan area - provides educators with detailed lesson plans for subject areas ranging from world history to life science to geography.
    • Links to other supporting resources
    • Teacher Community - provides educators with a forum they can use for feedback on lesson plans and curriculum planning, and it allows for a search for education material by subject, grade level, and resource type.
  • Visions of Earth - Each month, National Geographic magazine features breathtaking photographs at this website. Browse through visions of the world as seen through a photographer's eye.
  • Smithsonian American Art Museum Student Podcasts – These student podcasts were made by high school and middle school students as part of a creative writing assignment. They were researched and written by the students and reflect their own interpretations of the subject, Nature and Art.
  • Bobby Bucket Show - A Podcast for Kids, Parents, and Readers of all ages! Elementary school teacher, Bob Sprankle, has created podcasts about children’s books. He introduces children to books thematically, teaches comprehension and literary devices using guest characters, interviews book creators and on-location reporting in libraries and book stores.
